Sergeant J. F. BARCLAY & Constable G. LLOYD
About 1.20 am on 1 December, 1948, Constable Lloyd and
Sergeant Barclay attended a fire in a tenement. They went upstairs and searched a flat
which they found to be empty. At this point a section of the stairwell roof collapsed
on them and they were separated. Constable Lloyd found a family of four in a flat.
They were going to jump from the window but the Constable stopped them and signalled a
Fire Brigade turntable ladder to rescue them. Sergeant Barclay found two familes cut
off from the stairway. He also signalled for the turntable ladder and all were rescued,
despite another roof fall separating him from them.
