Sergeant D. CAIRNS & Constable R. GILLESPIE

1934

On 27 August 1934, a child was playing on a railway storeage tank at Dawsholm railway station when he overbalanced and fell through the small manhole, into the tank which contained water 8 feet deep. Sergeant Cairns (left) and Constable Gillespie (right) arrived at the scene. Constable Gillespie, having removed his tunic and entered the tank, was soon entangled in the internal support structure. He was pulled out and Sergeant Cairns entered the tank head first. He dived to the bottom and found the boy trapped under a motor tyre. He lifted him free and took him to the surface. Despite artificial respiration, the boy died. (London Gazette 1.1.35)
