Constable JAMES A.Y. LLOYD

On 30 May, 1939, while escorting children across the street, Constable Lloyd saw a runaway horse and cart heading towards him. He hurryed the children to safety, then ran across the street and seized hold of the reins and collar of the horse. He held on for about 60 yards and, due to the position of the shafts of the cart, he was unable to turn the horse away from a collision with a lorry. He did not managed to jump clear in time and was crushed between the cart and the lorry, sustaining serious injuries. (London gazette - 1.1.40)
